The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist a binding element holding it together in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, before he to later acknowledge that the management had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club became as messy in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.
The Youngster's Unexpected Comeback
One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio during this campaign. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.
He joined in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."
Uncovering His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
